The ID Austria (E-ID) is the successor to the mobile phone signature and the key to secure digital services. With the ID Austria (e-ID) you can prove your identity to digital applications and services in order to use various services. The ID Austria (electronic identity) is therefore the key to secure digital services. ID Austria is a further development of the mobile phone signature and citizen card. From summer 2022, it can be used not only in the official environment, but also for private-sector services.
Roadmap: Citizen Card -> ID Austria
Digital identity has passed many milestones in Austria since the citizen card was launched in 2003. The mobile phone signature, which can only be used in an official environment, will be replaced by ID Austria in 2022. When people apply for a new passport, they automatically receive an ID Austria. A refusal is only possible with an active opt-out. All mobile phone signatures that are active and activated up until the introduction of ID Austria will be automatically converted when ID Austria is launched. The functionality of the Handy-Signatur remains available.An officially activated cell phone signature can be switched to ID Austria without going through the authorities. Visiting an office to switch to ID Austria is only necessary if the mobile phone signature was originally activated by a private company (A1, Post).
Technical description
If you want to use the ID Austria login for authentication with your services, you are the service provider, ID Austria is the identity provider. The ID Austria login can be integrated into websites and apps (Android + iOS). Two integration variants are available for communication between applications of a service provider and the identity provider. The recommended variant is a direct connection of the application to the ID Austria system using one of the two supported protocols: SAML2 or OpenID Connect (OIDC). We accompany you during the entire implementation process and are happy to take over the implementation of the ID Austria login. ID Austria can be easily integrated into existing Customer Identity & Access Management solutions and is compatible with WSO2 Identity Server and Evolveum midPoint.Use Case: opening a bank account

Social logins (Google, Facebook, Login) are not suitable for Anna’s authentication, as social logins do not meet the strict regulatory requirements in the financial sector (KYC, anti-money laundering law). That is why Modern Banking AG offers its new and existing customers authentication via ID Austria login. Since Anna’s identity has been officially verified, it is guaranteed that it really is Anna. It is therefore possible to pre-fill the application for opening Anna’s checking account with all master data (name, date of birth, address, etc.) and Anna only has to confirm her details. Anna opened a checking account within a few minutes and is positively surprised at how quickly and easily she was able to submit her application to Modern Banking AG.
